For those of you who know me from Georgia Tech, or the United World College of the Atlantic (AC), I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech on August 4th, 2000. I moved back to India 10 days later and started working in the family construction firm Amma Lines Ltd (www.ammalines.com). You can learn more about the company on the company website.
But to give you a brief - My parents used to live in the United States where my father was completing his Ph.D. After that, he came back and joined my maternal grandfather in building the Port of Tuticorin in South India. I was just born around that time in 1977 and I was my grandfather's favourite..something that lasted for 23 years..
Amma Lines was started by my father and mother in 1980. The first work was in Mandwa (near Bombay) by Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers, for making a jetty for their over-sized cargo. We are grateful to Mr. Nadkar for taking a chance with us. With that work, Amma Lines was born..
Then onwards, with my brilliant father and mother, Amma Lines grew and grew - taking on NOT bigger projects, but always CHALLENGING projects. My father was only interested in something that offfered this engineer - turned Scientist - turned Businessman a challenge.
Well, when I came back I jumped head first from University into the family business. So now, I am working with my father in this company and its been great being back home in India.
Ever since I came back, I joined the company and worked in various projects. The biggest thing we are working on is building the Rewas Avare Port. More on this can be read at www.ammalines.com or www.rewasports.com.
The port location was discovered by my father and after years of working with the Government on this, we signed the BOOST *(Build-Own-Operate-Share-Transfer) (a term coined by my father from the BOOT policy) concession agreement with the Government of Maharashtra in March 2002. Since then, we've been working on the project. Being a $1 Billion dollar project, it obviously takes time for all the permissions and clearances which is what we're working on. But the most exciting thing is right now - planning, seeing things take shape, first as a thought, an idea -then into reality..
In 2004, IL&FS (www.ilfsindia.com)joined up with us as financial advisors and co-developers. Together we created the Rewas Port Development Company with them to see through my father's dream.
While all this is going on, work in Amma Lines continues being a challenge - learning the ropes and taking on more responsibilities. Work has been great as have many interesting people from Bombay. I do hope some of you who I know personally will be able to come to India one day. Until then, the information below is the best way to get in touch with me. Ciao!
